What does it mean when someone’s in an “open relationship”?

I’m going to be at school pretty much all day, working on homework and the like.
I got a letter from my friend who is serving a mission a couple of days ago, and I need to write back to him and get to the post office sometime.
My boss’ new store is opening on Thursday or Friday, and hopefully I’ll start working there this weekend.
